A 3-day intensive course
organized by screenwriter, director and script consultant for film, TV
and theater, Kelly Davis, who has formerly worked with BBC and Fox
Japan.

COURSE DETAILS
Strengthen your understanding of what the ingredients of a good story
are. Improve your storytelling abilities (for film, TV, video, stage,
novels, short stories, radio, etc). Find your own voice. Get on the
road to developing and perfecting your own script or story idea. Learn
some tricks to pull your audience into your world and keep them in
their seats until you’ve finished with them. Both beginners and
advanced-level participants welcome.

We’ll discuss some of the basics of storytelling and also more
complicated principles that professional writers faces. We’ll cover
several aspects of storytelling; character, dialogue, plot, setting,
theme, story structure, and alot more. Through lecture, in-depth
1-to-1 and group feedback, rewriting and rethinking your story,
participants will make considerable progress with their individual
projects.

Some topics to be explained, discussed, and applied to your story include:
- The nature of conflict in story: Why conflict is so important to story.
- Establishing your authority over the audience: Using knowledge and emotion.
- Theme, setting and mood: Creating anchors for your audience to hold on to.
- Comedic vs. dramatic storytelling: Analyzing characters actions and
your storytelling world.
- Problems and goals: Placing obstacles along the path of the goal -
Does size matter?
- Rites of passage, the human psyche and psychology in storytelling.
- Characters: Increasing their depth, examining their motivation,
exploring how their traits can affect plot, how their flaws can
reflect goals, balancing realistic actions vs. interesting actions.
- Interweaving and juxtaposing multiple plots, contrasting plots and subplots.
- Exposition: Making information in your story invisible and entertaining.
- Scenes: Strengthening scenes and maximizing their repercussions.
- Set-ups and pay-offs: Creating anticipation, recognition,
fascination, uncertainty, and curiosity in your audience and keeping
them in their seats.
- Story structure: Rising and falling action, reducing and tightening
the elements of a story, classical structural theories and alternative
forms of storytelling.
- Dialogue: Exposing character, moving the story forward, and keeping
it entertaining
- Making your concept more unique and interesting.
- The resolution: Using ‘buried guns’, subplots and insignificant
details to find a satisfying ending. As well as, happy, sad, twist,
open and reflexive endings.

GUIDELINES
Participants should come with an idea or rough draft for a story
project. Any genre is ok (drama, comedy, romance, experimental,
horror, thriller, documentary, adventure, etc). Writing teams of 2
people are also welcome. Previous participants of past workshops can
also apply to this workshop with previous or new projects, and further
tighten and polish their ideas. The course will be conducted in
English, but you can write your script or project in any language more
familiar to you.

KELLY DAVIS (BRIEF BIO)
Kelly has written, directed and worked as a script consultant on short
and feature films, TV sitcoms and variety shows, TV advertisements,
stage plays and radio plays. He has worked with; NHK (Japan
Broadcasting Corporation) and Fox Japan (Tokyo), BBC (London),
Filmkameratene (Oslo) and many other companies. He has lectured and
conducted courses in Norway, Finland, Japan, Italy, The Netherlands,
Sweden and the UK.
