Atelier Nord received a total of 72 applications for the Open Call 2025. After a thorough review of all the applications, the jury selected Amber Ablett’s exhibition proposal.

Ablett’s project is a sound and video installation that explores her father’s migration journey from Trinidad, a former British colony, to the United Kingdom in the 1960s. In addition to this, the work addresses various stereotypes and prejudices associated with how the Black male role is portrayed in the West. Furthermore, the project explores how such prejudices can affect the relationship between fathers and children.

The jury feels that Ablett’s exhibition proposal successfully intertwines a personal narrative with historical events. At the same time, she succeeds in making the listener aware of a larger societal context while encouraging reflection. Her proposal was tailored to Atelier Nord’s gallery space and is part of an artistic practice that has delved into identity and migration over a longer period, while also taking into account relevant perspectives from critical theory.

The jury for this Open Call round consisted of Synne Tollerud Bull, Ida Lykken Ghosh, Admir Korjenic-Hansen, and Nicholas Norton.

The work has been commissioned and presented in collaboration with Borealis – a festival for experimental music, and BEK – Bergen Center for Electronic Arts. Supported by the Arts Council Norway, the Fund for Sound and Image, and the Bergen municipality. Part of New Perspectives for Action – a project by Re-Imagine Europe, co-funded by the European Union.

Atelier Nord mottok i alt 72 søknader til Open Call 2025. Etter en grundig gjennomgang av samtlige søknader valgte juryen Amber Abletts utstillingsforslag. 

Abletts prosjekt er en lyd- og videoinstallasjon som omhandler hennes far og gjenforteller hans migrasjonsreise fra Trinidad, en tidligere britisk koloni, til Storbritannia på 1960-tallet. Utover dette tar verket for seg ulike stereotypier og fordommer knyttet til hvordan den svarte mannsrollen fremstilles i vesten. Videre utforsker prosjektet hvordan slike forestillinger kan påvirke forholdet mellom fedre og barn.

Juryen opplever at utstillingsforslaget til Ablett lyktes med å nøste sammen en personlig fortelling med historiske hendelser. Samtidig lykkes hun med å gjøre lytteren oppmerksom på en større samfunnsmessig kontekst og oppmuntrer til refleksjon rundt denne. Forslaget var tydelig tilpasset Atelier Nords gallerirom og inngår i et kunstnerskap som over lengre tid har fordypet seg i identitet og migrasjon med en tydelig forankring i relevant kritisk teori.
