Vi har gleden av å inviterer til en ettermiddag med professor i filmhistorie ved Universitetet i Chicago Tom Gunning og filmskaper Paul Kaiser fra OpenEndedGroup.

Med prosjektet “Framing, Re-Framing, and Un-Framing Cinema—inventing methods for measuring, investigating, and creating film in the emerging age of virtual reality,” har Gunning og The OpenEndedGroup undersøkt og intervenert i aktuelle endringer innenfor bevegelige bilder, fra billedrammen i klassisk film til den immersive, rammeløse interaktiviteten som er premissbærende for virtuell virkelighet. Prosjektet ble utviklet med støtte fra Andrew Mellon Collaborative Fellowship for Arts Practice ved the Grey Center for Arts and Inquiry, et forskningssenter ved University of Chicago som legger til rette for eksperimentelle samarbeid mellom kunstnere og akademikere.

I presentasjonen på Cinemateket, skal Gunning og Kaiser dele noen erfaringer fra dette banebrytende prosjektet. Tom Gunning holder en forelesning i forkant av den norske premieren av 3d-filmen Ulysses in the Subway (2016), som er laget i samarbeid med de eksperimentelle filmskaperne Ken og Flo Jacobs. Screeningen etterfølges av en samtale mellom Gunning og Kaiser.

Tom Gunning er professor i filmhistorie ved avdelingen for kunsthistorie, film og medievitenskap på Universitetet i Chicago. Han har forfattet flere bøker, der i blant  D.W. Griffith and the Origins of American Narrative Film (University of Illinois Press) og The Films of Fritz Lang; Allegories of Vision and Modernity  (British Film Institute). Gunning var nylig medforfatter for bildeboken The Fantasia of Color in Early Cinema, i samarbeid med the Eye Museum in Amsterdam. Han har publisert over 150 artikler om tidlig film, film historie og teori, avantgardefilm, sjangerbegrepet og forbindelsen mellom film og modernitet. For tiden arbeider Gunning med en bok om oppfinnelsen av bevegelige- og projiserte bilder, i tillegg til et teaterprosjekt ved California Institute of the Arts basert på Fantômas, en banditt-figur som ble popularisert i fransk populærkultur ved overgangen til 1900-tallet.

OpenEndedGroup består av to digitale kunstnere: Marc Downie og Paul Kaiser. Pionerarbeidet deres innen digital kunst kombinerer i hovedsak tre signatur-elementer: ikke-realistisk 3D-rendering; innlemmelse av kroppen gjennom motion-capture eller relaterte teknikker; autonome kunstverk assistert eller regissert av kunstige intelligenser. Alltid i samarbeid og på tvers fagområder, beveger de seg inn og ut av etablerte felt uten hensyn til foruteksisterende strukturer, i søken etter nye måter å fange verden. I løpet av det siste tiåret har de skapt kunst for varierte medier og omgivelser: fasader, gallerier, dans, scenekunst og film. Arbeidene deres benytter mangfoldige materialer – tegning, film, motion capture, fotografi, musikk og arkitektur.

We are pleased to welcome you to an afternoon with legendary film history professor Tom Gunning and acclaimed filmmaker Paul Kaiser of OpenEndedGroup.

With the project “Framing, Re-Framing, and Un-Framing Cinema—inventing methods for measuring, investigating, and creating film in the emerging age of virtual reality,” Professor Gunning and The OpenEndedGroup has sought to study and intervene in the current redefinition of the moving image as it shifts from the frame of classical cinema to the immersive framelessness and interactivity of virtual reality. This project was developed as part of their Andrew Mellon Collaborative Fellowship for Arts Practice and Scholarship program at the Grey Center for Arts and Inquiry, designed to foster intensive and experimental collaborations between artists and scholars. 

At Cinemateket, Gunning and Kasier will share some of their experiences form this cutting-edge project. The program will feature a lecture by Tom Gunning before the Norwegian premiere of the 3D film Ulysses in the Subway (2016), created in collaboration with renowned experimental filmmakers Ken and Flo Jacobs. The screening will be followed by a conversation between Gunning and Kaiser.

The event is free and open for all. It will be possible to purchase 3D-glasses for 25NOK at Cinemateket, but we strongly encourage you to bring your own if possible!

Tom Gunning is the Edwin A. and Betty L. Bergman Distinguished Service Professor in the Departments of  Art History, Cinema and Media Studies, and the College at the University of Chicago.  He is the author of D.W. Griffith and the Origins of American Narrative Film (University of Illinois Press) and The Films of Fritz Lang; Allegories of Vision and Modernity  (British Film Institute), and most recently co-authored the picture book The Fantasia of Color in Early Cinema with the Eye Museum in Amsterdam. He has published over one hundred and fifty articles on early cinema, film history and theory, avant-garde film, film genre, and the relation between cinema and modernism. With Andre Gaudreault he originated the influential theory of the “Cinema of Attractions.” In 2009, he was the first film scholar to receive an Andrew A. Mellon Distinguished Achievement Award, and in 2010, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is currently working on a book on the invention of the moving and projected image, as well as a theater project at California Institute of the Arts based on Fantômas, the phantom bandit of turn of the century French popular culture.

OpenEndedGroup comprises two digital artists: Marc Downie and Paul Kaiser. Their pioneering approach to digital art frequently combines three signature elements: non-photorealistic 3D rendering; the incorporation of body movement by motion-capture and other means; and the autonomy of artworks directed or assisted by artificial intelligence. Always in collaboration and always crossing disciplinary boundaries, they enter and exit fields without permission from, and without deference to, established disciplinary structures, finding new ways to conceive the world. Over the last ten years they have worked in the broadest variety of media and venues: making art for façade, gallery, dance, stage and cinema. Their works respond to an ever-expanding range of materials — drawing, film, motion capture, photography, music, and architecture.
