Bli med på en livekonsert med den ledende lydkunstneren Jana Winderen i Atelier Nords gallerirom. 

“Døde soner” er vannlegemer som lider av hypoksi, det vil si at oksygenkonsentrasjonen i vannet er blitt så lav at ikke noe liv overlever. Hypoksi er forårsaket av alge-overvekst, et fenomen som oppstår når det er for mye næringsstoffer i vannet. Den bakterielle nedbrytningen av alger har et høyt oksygenforbruk slik at det blir for lite oksygen tilgjengelig til at andre arter greier å overleve. Selv om døde soner kan dannes spontant, har forskere observert den eksponentielle økningen i antallet siden 1960-tallet og bemerket at det er en årsakssammenheng mellom fenomenet og forurensning. Listening Through the Dead Zones er en sonisk kontemplasjon over ødeleggelsene undervannsbiotoper utsettes for. Lyder fra Polhavet på Grønland, Island og Norge, samt fra det tropiske vannet rundt Thailand, Det karibiske hav og Panama er spilt inn av Jana Winderen med hydrofoner. Verket inviterer publikum til å lytte på undervannslydlandskaper befolket av ulike dyrearter som er avhengige av lyd for å kommunisere, jakte og orientere seg. Samtidig vil man høre lyden av oljeutvinning, militære ekkolodd, fritidsbåttrafikk og andre menneskeskapte faktorer forårsaker vanskeligheter for livet i havet. 

Listening Through the Dead Zones er laget på bestilling av IHME Helsinki i 2020.

Jana Winderen er utdannet billedkunstner fra Goldsmiths University, London, og Falmouth School of Art and Design, Cornwall. Hun har også studert matematikk, kjemi og fiskeøkologi ved Universitetet i Oslo. Winderens arbeider har blitt vist og fremført i sentrale internasjonale institusjoner og offentlige rom i Asia, Europa og USA, blant annet ved Lenfest Center for the Arts, Colombia University, New York  (2022),  gnration i Braga, Portugal (2022), Lands End at Cliff House, San Fransisco (2022), NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore, IHME at Helsinki Rowing Stadium (2021), Wuzhen International Art Exhibition, Kina (2019), Art Basel i Miami, USA (2019), Kunstnernes Hus i Oslo, Thailand International Art Biennale i Krabi (2018–2019), Park Avenue Tunnell, New York, på Trafalgar square, London, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) og Guggenheim Museum/Unsound Festival. Hun har gjort flere permanente lydinstallasjoner, blant annet for U.S Embassy i Oslo og Hamsunsenteret på Hamarøy, Nordland. Hun er innkjøpt av Thüssen Bornemisza Art Contemporary i Wien, av RMIT University Sound Art Collection i Melbourne og Nasjonalmuseet i Oslo. Hun utgir arbeiden sine på Touch i London/LA.

Join us for a live concert with leading sound artist Jana Winderen in Atelier Nord’s gallery space.

‘Dead zones’ are water bodies that suffer from hypoxia, low oxygen concentrations in the water that make marine life unsustainable. Hypoxia is caused by algal overgrowths, a phenomenon occurring when an excess of nutrients in the water sparks the proliferation of algae. The bacterial decomposition of the algae is a high oxygen consuming process that depletes the amount of oxygen available for other species to survive. Although dead zones can form spontaneously, scientists have observed the exponential increase in their number since the 1960s and remarked that there is a causal relation between their formation and the polluting inputs produced by human activity. Listening Through the Dead Zones is a sonic contemplation over the disruptive impact of human activities on subaqueous environments. Sounds from the Arctic Ocean in Greenland, Iceland, and Norway as well as from the tropical waters around Thailand, the Caribbean Sea, and Panama have been recorded by Jana Winderen with hydrophones. The work invites the audience to eavesdrop onto underwater soundscapes populated by various animal species that depend on sound to communicate, hunt, and orientate while shipping, oil extraction, military sonars, leisure boat traffic and other anthropogenic factors inflict acoustic distress on marine life.

Jana Winderen is an artist based in Norway with a background in mathematics, chemistry and fish ecology. Her practice pays particular attention to audio environments and to creatures which are hard for humans to access, both physically and aurally – deep under water, inside ice or in frequency ranges inaudible to the human ear. Her activities include site-specific and spatial audio installations and concerts, exhibited and performed internationally in major institutions and public spaces. Most recent work includes The Art of Listening: Underwater at Lenfest Center for the Arts, Colombia University, New York and at Art Basel, Miami. In 2011 she won the Golden Nica at Ars Electronica for Digital Music & Sound Art. She releases her audio-visual work on Touch (UK).
