In Eit gøyme, Anne-Marte Før considers preservation, use, transformation and the ambiguity of belonging to place. The artist works with objects that are old, created through knowledge passed from hand to hand, from body to body. Objects that have moved through landscapes and been of use through winters and springs. Eit gøyme is Anne-Marte Før’s first solo exhibition in Oslo.

Objects that cross time and space
For this exihibtion, Før returns to three earlier works and uncovers new or different layers within them, allowing them to draw on one another. Here we encounter a bird or several birds, animal bells, troughs, and an old wooden bowl. These objects hold local memories and traces that can connect them to a place, to a time, yet possessing something more universal and timeless. These are objects that, in their own ways, cross time and space while also becoming carriers of meaning for the world today.

Cultural-historical material
Anne-Marte Før works with cultural-historical material in a broad sense, reflecting on transformation, absence, the in-between, and time. She is interested in place-bound and fluid identities, and in how objects, songs, stories, knowledge, and art change through processes of passing on traditions.

About Anne-Marte Før
Anne-Marte Før is a visual artist based in Valdres/Oslo. She holds a master’s degree from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (2024). Før’s practice is not medium-specific and ranges from installation, sound work, objects, and sculpture to text. Her work has been shown at, among others, Guttormsgaard Arkiv, Blaker; Gallery Carillion, Dallas, USA; Kunstbanken Performance Festival, Hamar; and Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo. Før also runs the art project Flyktig/Fugitive together with Gary Farrelly, where each summer since 2021 they have invited artists to work with performative and temporary practices in Valdres.

I Eit gøyme utforsker Anne-Marte Før et tvisyn knyttet til stedbundenhet, bevaring, bruk og omforming. Hun utforsker håndminne og handlingsbåren kunnskap. Kunstneren jobber med gjenstander som er gamle, laget med kunnskap som er overført fra hånd til hånd, fra kropp til kropp. Gjenstander som har flyttet seg gjennom landskap og som har vært til nytte både vintrer og vårer. Eit gøyme er Anne-Marte Førs første separatutstilling i Oslo.

Gjenstander som krysser tid og rom

I utstillingen vender Anne-Marte Før tilbake til tre tidligere verk. Hun forsøker å hente frem noe mer eller noe annet fra de, la de trekke veksler på hverandre. Her får vi møte en fugl eller flere, dyrebjeller, trau og en ølbolle. Disse gjenstandene har lokale minner og spor, som kan knytte de til et sted, til en tid, men samtidig har de, for kunstneren, noe universelt og kanskje tidløst ved seg. For Før krysser disse gjenstandene, på sine vis, tid og rom, samtidig som de blir meningsbærere til ulike tider og for verden nå.

Kulturhistorisk materiale

Anne-Marte Før arbeider med kulturhistorisk materiale i vid forstand og reflekterer over transformasjon, fravær, mellomrom og tid. Kunstneren er interessert i stedbundne og flytende identiteter, og hvordan gjenstander, sanger, fortellinger, kunnskap og kunst endrer seg gjennom traderingsprosesser.

Om Anne-Marte Før

Anne-Marte Før er billedkunstner bosatt i Valdres/Oslo. Hun har en mastergrad fra Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo (2024). Førs praksis er ikke mediespesifikk og spenner fra installasjon, lydarbeid, objekt og skulptur til tekst. Arbeidene hennes har vært vist på blant annet Guttormsgaard Arkiv, Blaker, Gallery Carillion, Dallas, USA, Kunstbanken Performancefestival, Hamar og Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo. Før driver også kunstprosjektet Flyktig / Fugitive, sammen med Gary Farrelly, der de hver sommer siden 2021 har invitert kunstnere til å jobbe med performative og temporære praksiser i Valdres.
