Exhibition Opportunity Announcement

Open Call

In December 2016 Atelier Nord added an open call for art projects to the 2017 programme of our gallery space, Atelier Nord ANX. The open call was intended to be a new opportunity for artists that want to show media experimental, technology-driven art.

We received a total of 62 applications from individual artists as well as groups, and would like to extend our thanks to everyone that applied. The committee (consisting of Ivar Smedstad, Ida Lykken Ghosh, Mattias Härenstam and Synne Tollerud Bull) was impressed by the quality of the applications we received, as well as the considerable variation between applicants’ projects in terms of style, technical solutions, themes and approaches to the exhibition space.

After careful consideration, the committee decided to award the exhibition opportunity to Richard Alexandersson, Pete Fleming and Jessica MacMillan. The committee emphasized that the Oslo based trio delivered a well-formulated application that concisely described the relationship between their separate practices, spanning video, sculpture and photography. Additionally, the committee was convinced by each artists’ distinct relationship with media and technology. Pete Fleming through his interest in optics and the sensory apparatus, Richard Alexandersson with science fiction and 3D-animation and Jessica MacMillan through her focus on astronomy and physics.

Rather than testing the limits of technology, the artists aim to use technology to explore limitations—both physical and conceptual. Offering both fact and fiction, this exhibition will question how media affect the sensory perception of our surroundings.

The large number of applicants and consistently high quality of applications has convinced us that regular open calls can be a valuable contribution to the exhibition programme at Atelier Nord ANX.
