Paul DeMarinis – Weave Wave Woven

Weave Wave Woven is a new sound installation by Paul DeMarinis. The installation consists of four directional loop antennas, placed in a row in the centre of the gallery. Each antenna produces short bursts of electromagnetic waves and sound that radiate out into space. Several vintage radios receive the waves and translate them back into audible clicks. The series of clicks – Morse code for the letter “S” – reference the first transatlantic radio transmission, by the Italian physicist and engineer Guglielmo Marconi in 1901.

Weave Wave Woven was created to commemorate the transition from analog to digital radio in Norway. In Oslo, the switch from FM to DAB will take place during September 2017. Nationwide, the transition is scheduled to be completed by December 13th, 2017.

Paul DeMarinis (b. 1948, Ohio) is one of the early innovators of sound art, emerging from the experimental sound and music scene that developed in California in the 1960s and 70s. His work challenges the notion of technologically driven transformations of society, frequently taking into account historical context. DeMarinis’ artistic interests include physics and the invention of technical objects and devices. Since 2000, he has been Professor of Art at Stanford University. His many collaborators include David Tudor and David Behrman and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. DeMarinis has received numerous awards and grants, including the Goldene Nica des Prix Ars Electronica, Linz in 2006 in the category of “Interactive Art” for his work The Messenger from 1998 (revised version 2005).
