Welcome to an artist talk with Fatou Åsbakk, led by curator and writer Mike Sperlinger. The conversation is organized in conjunction with Åsbakk’s solo exhibition, Norway’s Greatest Filmmaker Is Holding a Pretrospective, but the Gallery Believes That People Will Interpret the Title Literally, so They Asked Her to Call It Something Else, at Atelier Nord. Åsbakk’s film Celle F (2024) will be the starting point for the conversation and will be screened as part of the event. In the film, she discusses her own creative process, the medium of film, collaboration with Atelier Nord, as well as ambitions and concerns related to her artistic practice. The title of the work is derived from a workspace Åsbakk often uses at the National Museum’s library.

Fatou Åsbakk lives and works in Oslo. She graduated from the Oslo Academy of Fine Arts in 2019. Previous solo exhibitions include Prosessen er for lett sa Lasse, du må kalle det noe annet at Kunsthall Oslo in 2022 and Etyder at Destiny’s in 2018. Åsbakk’s novel Været og Uvirksomheten was published by Kolon forlag in 2020.

Mike Sperlinger is a writer, curator, and until recently, a professor in writing and theory at the Oslo Academy of Fine Arts. In 2024, he will assume the position of Head of Programme at the Office for Contemporary Art Norway. Sperlinger has written for Afterall, Art Monthly, Dot Dot Dot, Frieze, Radical Philosophy, and Texte zur Kunst. In 2002, he co-founded LUX in London, an agency for artists working with the moving image.

Velkommen til kunstnersamtale med kunstner Fatou Åsbakk ledet av kurator og skribent Mike Sperlinger. Samtalen arrangeres i anledning av Åsbakks soloutstilling «Norges største filmskaper avholder en pretrospektiv, men galleriet tror at folk kommer til å tolke tittelen bokstavelig, så de ber henne kalle den noe annet» på Atelier Nord.  Les mer om utstillingen her.

Åsbakks film Celle F (2024) vil være utgangspunktet for samtalen og vises som del av arrangementet. I filmen drøfter hun sin egen arbeidsprosess, filmmediet og samarbeidet med visningsstedet, samt ambisjoner og bekymringer knyttet til kunstnervirket sitt. Tittelen på verket er hentet fra et arbeidsrom Åsbakk ofte benytter på Nasjonalmuseets bibliotek.

Fatou Åsbakk bor og jobber i Oslo. Hun ble uteksaminert fra Kunstakademiet i Oslo i 2019.
