Atelier Nord Residency

These artists have been selected

Lin Pei-Han, Ørjan Amundsen and Beatrice Alvestad Lopez have been selected for Atelier Nord’s new residency program for artistic research on Artificial Intelligence as Environment. The residency programme was announced in August 2026. The three artists will each spend six months in residence between January 2027 and June 2028. The programme has been developed in collaboration with MishMash – Centre for AI and Creativity, the Kristiania AI Centre (KAI) at Kristiania University of Applied Sciences, and Talent Norge.

Atelier Nord Residency is grounded in AI as Environment, a research programme developed by the AI Ecologies research group at Kristiania University of Applied Sciences, in the project Kunstens co-pilot: Kunst og KI i et prosessøkologisk perspektiv, funded by Kulturrådet (2026-2028).

The three selected artists each demonstrate how art can explore the ways in which AI shapes our society and the way we live. The jury has been impressed by strong artistic practices and distinctive perspectives. We look forward to seeing how their practices develop when given the time, space and resources to grow. — Jury, Atelier Nord Residency

The selected artists will be invited to participate in a group exhibition at Atelier Nord in spring 2028, bringing together projects and perspectives developed through the residency programme. The exhibition will be accompanied by an artist talk and a publication.

Lin Pei-Han: A Taiwanese Perspective on European AI Discourse

During her residency, Lin Pei-Han will develop Bwa Bwei, an installation exploring the material and geopolitical realities of computing technology from the perspective of Taiwan, which lies at the heart of the global AI boom. The island’s dominant position in semiconductor manufacturing makes Taiwan both one of the safest places for everyday life and one of the most geopolitically vulnerable. Pei-Han will explore this tension through a spatial installation combining rituals associated with the burning of paper with active electronics. Her aim is to bring a Taiwanese perspective to European AI discourse and shed light on the human realities behind today’s technologies.

Lin Pei-Han (b. 1988) is a Taiwanese interdisciplinary artist based in Norway. Working across painting, video, sculpture, installation, textiles, sound and text, she develops a research-based artistic practice, exploring connections between politics, environmental justice, human rights, culture, memory and identity. She combines analogue and digital methods, including digital forensics, interviews and 3D printing, to investigate protest, vulnerability and cultural loss. She holds a bachelor’s degree in architectural design from Shih Chien University in Taipei and master’s degrees in Fine Art from Trondheim Academy of Fine Art and The Academy of Arts Tromsø.

Ørjan Amundsen: AI as a Technology We Live With and Are Shaped By

Ørjan Amundsen’s research project is titled Vanishing Point. The project considers AI the latest development in a history spanning more than a century, during which communication technologies have transformed how we perceive time, space and reality. Rather than primarily examining AI as a tool, the project approaches it as an environment we increasingly inhabit and are shaped by. At its core is a multi-chapter video work assembled from appropriated footage drawn from film history, video games, advertising and social media, with text and music serving as central layers.

Ørjan Amundsen’s (b. 1982) artistic practice is rooted in video, with text and music often functioning as integral elements. His works take the form of installations, film screenings, concerts and performances, and are characterised by a methodical use of appropriation, recontextualisation, editing and manipulation of existing visual, auditory and literary material. He studied at The Academy of Arts Tromsø and Trondheim Academy of Fine Art.

Beatrice Alvestad Lopez: Artificial Intelligence as a Living, Ecological Environment

Beatrice Alvestad Lopez explores artificial intelligence as a living, ecological environment. In her project, she asks how machine learning and generative systems might be understood through the networks found in nature. While traditional ecology examines the interdependence of trees and organisms in forests, this project focuses on how digital datasets, algorithms and synthetic generations constitute a new, invisible layer of our physical and mental surroundings. The project engages with the field of AI as Environment and explores posthumanist themes, ecofeminist perspectives on control and nature, and the intersection of neurodiversity and technological structures.

Beatrice Alvestad Lopez (b.1986) works across disciplines, primarily with sculptural installation, combining traditional craft techniques in wood, metal, ceramics and textiles with new media and found materials to create fictional, often ritualistic stagings and alternative ecological narratives. Her practice explores the relationship between humans and nature, with a focus on ecofeminism. Alvestad Lopez holds an MFA from Konstfack (Stockholm) and a BA in Textiles from Nuova Academia di Belle Arti (Milan).
