Do we have paranoia in common?
Must a strek be two-dimensional ?
What happens to an old Hollywood film when an algorithm is a director?
Is it a mountain or a lung?
And what are those gas pumps doing there?
Is art a way to catalog the world? Or, as resistance: a way to say something about the status quo by insisting on something else? Another way, another look, a different technique. When everything can be mass produced with the push of a button, something happens with the community – and with art. Values shift, the oversette will be seen, the significant change places with any other on the scales we use to understand and organize it around us. Something we take for granted. The petrol station, all the rubbish, dying species, secret rooms, the woven rag rug, the sound of wood, a graphic paper, a root in the forest, an elaborate and finished drawing, a word on a slip of paper and old movies in black and white. For the artists, this is still not obvious, but a material.
Graduating students from the MA program in Visual Arts at the Art Academy in Trondheim / NTNU are working in many techniques, directions and forms, but they touch the essential issues in our contemporary history. They reject, acknowledge, disfiguring, and paying close attention to concentrated areas that are easily visible, but no one seems to see. Is this real? Is it true? (Beathe C.Rønning, master-coordinator)
